Moananuiākea four-year voyage connects indigenous communities and the world

This week representatives from Kamehameha Schools will be in Juneau, Alaska, for the global launch of the Polynesian Voyaging Society's Moananuiākea: A Voyage for Earth. The delegation consists of Kamehameha Schools Kapālama haumāna and kumu, and a cultural protocol team from Hoʻokahua Cultural Vibrancy Group that will continue the Schoolsʻ nearly 50-year kuleana as culture bearers and heritage keepers for the Hōkūleʻa.

From loʻi kalo to the United Nations: New KSK pathway prepares haumāna for roles as ʻōiwi leaders

Middle school Kumu Paul Parish and Kumu Mark Pacarro use their collective manaʻo to nurture a new crop of ʻōiwi leaders through a two-year pathway called “Kaʻāmauloa.” Launched in fall 2022, the new loʻi kalo pathway provides haumāna an opportunity to learn about Hawaiʻi’s traditional sustainable practices and protocol that enabled kanaka ʻōiwi to flourish for centuries without aid from outside resources.
